1 Copyright What Teachers Need to Know!

2 Copyright for Printed Material Copyrighted material is property of others and teachers have been given special privileges. These privileges are called “fair use” guidelines. It is the teachers responsibility to their students to obey copyright laws and guidelines. Copyright law makes it illegal to duplicate anyone’s copyrighted material.

3 Fair Use Guidelines Make single copies of a chapter of a book Make a copy of an article from a periodical or newspaper Make a copy of a short story, short essay, or short poem Make a copy of a chart, graph, picture, or cartoon from a book, periodical, or newspaper. Classroom Teachers are allowed to : Full credit must be given to the copyrighted source.

4 More Fair Use Guidelines The purpose of the copied material must be for face to face teaching purposes. Copying from a consumable workbook would not be considered “Fair Use” Copying the whole piece of a work would not be considered “Fair Use”, however, copying a small part may be. 5 Video Policy A teacher is in attendance The showing takes place in a classroom setting The movie is used as an essential part of the current curriculum being taught Only G or PG rated movies can be shown with approval from administration. Forms can be found on the Craven County website. United Streaming—If showing entire video, approval form must be filled out. The Federal Copyright Act governs how copyrighted materials, such as movies, may be used. Neither the rental nor the purchase of a videocassette or DVD carries with it the right to use the movie outside the home. Fair Use guidelines allow a teacher to use videos if the following factors are adhered to.
