2 Declaration of Independence

3 The Declaration of Independence announced on July 2, 1776 but voted on by Congress on July 4, 1776 has four parts. Today you will learn what each part means and write brief statements from the document.

4 Preamble Lists the reasons for writing the Declaration “When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another…”

5 Protection of Natural Rights Says if a government fails to protect people’s natural rights, the people have a right to reject it and create another. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,[75] that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

6 Grievances Against the King Details the colonists complaints against the British government and King George III. “He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures. He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.”

7 Resolution States the colonies are free and independent and have proven the justness of their cause. “We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America…declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States;…”
