Makes Sense Vocabulary Strategies “Vocabulary” includes… New terms Famous people, places, events Important concepts, beliefs, and policies The vocabulary think-sheets are designed to feature: Gist & critical features Analogies Knowledge connections Key-word mnemonics Examples & Non-examples

Example of Knowledge & Experience connections

WHEN to use the Makes Sense Vocabulary Strategies Can apply at the beginning of a lesson to pre- teach vocabulary (not my first choice) Use during the lesson to facilitate note taking about important terms Use toward the end of the lesson to “anchor” key concepts taught within the context of the lesson All can be used as homework assignments (best assigned after the concept was taught during class) All are great alternative assessment tools

STUDENT factors that impair vocabulary learning Intellectual bulimia approach to learning Ineffective learning strategies Limited background knowledge Poor relational understandings Limited elaboration skills

DO Teach fewer vocabulary terms (but teach in a way that results in deep understanding of each term (less is more, depth is more) Teach terms necessary to understanding core ideas of lesson as reflected in learning standards Teach terms that will be used repeatedly through-out the semester (future success depends on learning these terms now)

DON’T teach or assign terms… Just because they have been highlighted in text chapter (italized, boldface print, etc.) Just because they appear in a list at the end of the chapter in the study guide That will have little utility once the student has passed the test That reflect large quantities of terms That the student will rarely encounter again

Gist & critical features Examples & Non-examples (what it is, what it’s not) Context Concrete Knowledge & Experiences Cognitive prompts (focus attention on what’s important) Analogies & similes Student-created visuals Mnemonic stories, rhymes, &/or songs

Scaffolding Vocabulary Instruction via Makes Sense Strategies Teacher demonstrates a completed version to illustrate effective application Teacher & class co-construct vocabulary think-sheets Students work together (without teacher) to complete vocabulary think-sheets Students independently complete vocabulary think-sheets Usually just once or twice Usually 5-7 times
