2 Susan Constant Discovery Godspeed In 1606, King James I gave permission to the Virginia Company of London to try a colony. -Joint-stock company- business in which investors pool their wealth in order to turn profit (shares) Christopher Newport led the three ships, Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery to Jamestown. **Jamestown colony=First permanent settlement in North America Present day Virginia

3 Charter- a written contract, issued by a government, giving the holder the right to establish a colony Climate: swampy and full of Malaria carrying mosquitoes many colonists also became sick from drinking the water. Summers were harsh and winters cold and bitter 1607-100 colonists 1608-38 colonists

5 In 1608 with only 38 colonists alive John Smith took over “He that will not work shall not eat” Ordered a wall extending around Jamestown Persuaded the Powhatan tribe to trade corn Injured 1609 in a gun power explosion and returned to England 800 more settlers arrived in Jamestown

6 Because of growing tension with Native Americans the Powhatans stopped trading food and attacked settlers Settlers were forced to eat rats, mice, and snakes. Only 60 colonists remained alive In 1610 two ships arrived and the “starving time” was over

7 John Rolfe in 1614 found a way to harvest tobacco. This quickly became the cash crop of Virginia. He also married Pocahontas in 1614 and created peace with the Powhatan Native Americans for 8 years. Because of the cash crop of tobacco more laborers were needed Indentured servants- a person who sold his/her labor in exchange for passage to America

8 Colonists were annoyed with strict rule of governor of the Virginia company of England House of Burgesses Created in 1619, became the first representative assembly in American Colonies Met once a year in an assembly

9 The expanding tobacco plantations took over more and more Powhatan land In 1622 the Powhatan killed hundreds of colonists of Jamestown *Guess the artifact
