6 2011 Intakes u January 31 u March 15 Intakes 6 weeks apart (1 st or 2 nd intake is negotiated at interview) 8 positions available in the Acute GNP 2 positions in the Aged Care GNP

7 CLINICAL ROTATIONS Medical Surgical High Dependency Unit (6 wks) Emergency Department (6 wks) One Elective (6 wks) - Haemodialysis - Operating Room - District Nursing

8 Academic Components u Five paid study days u Monthly tutorials (one hour) u Ward based assessments Medication administration Manual handling Documentation audit u Program Assessments Infection control Drug calculations

9 Other Requirements u Annual BLS Competency u My Work Plan x 2 per year u Clinical Performance Tool (feedback from preceptors) u Short presentation during one of the Tutorial days

11 Specialty Program Introduction of a specialty Aged Care Graduate Year Program (since 2003) as a career pathway choice 2 positions available for 2011

12 Projected Population u In 2011 – 17% of the Baw Baw Shire population are projected to be over 65 years of age u 50 % of these people will be 75+

13 What Do We Need? Aged Care Nurses

14 WGHG – Residential Aged Care u Andrews House 50 bed aged care facility using an “ageing in place” model Situated in Trafalgar. u Cooinda Lodge 60 bed aged care facility. Co-located at Warragul.

15 Aim of the Aged Care Program The aim of the Aged Care Graduate Program is to provide the opportunity to care for the aged in a home like environment. Residential aged care offers the diversity of managing residents with co-morbidities as well as acute episodes. “Ageing in Place” is a model of care that enables the nurse to follow disease processes.

17 Is the Aged Care GNP for me? Feedback from paste graduates who have participated in the Aged Care Program has been very positive. It allows graduates to gain experience in aged care but also offers a range of rotations in the acute sector. This provides for an interesting and varied graduate year, allowing freedom of choice for career pathways.
