4  George Washington George Washington 1732-1799  Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman 1820-1913  Buffalo Bill Buffalo Bill 1846-1917 No matter what the job, he was ready to take the lead. A woman who fought for those who deserved freedom. A young man searching for adventures in the Wild West.

5 George Washington  Used his math skills to work as a land surveyor.  Performed bravely as a leader of the continental army.  Ready to retire but felt great honor and could not turn down the job as the first president. 6 The Washington Monument This monument located in the heart of Washington D.C. allows the citizens of the United States to reflect and show respect for a man whose guidance still has an effect on our country today. 7 Think About It!  What other person do you know who has the same interest as George Washington?  What person has followed the same path in life?  How has Washington’s career affected your life?

8 Harriet Tubman  Harriet was the sixth of eleven children born into a family of slavery.  Knowing that she had a right to liberty, she planned her escape.  She began work as a conductor leading other slaves through the Railroad to Freedom. 9 Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged and Indigent Black Americans After the Civil War, Harriet continued her humanitarian work taking in orphans and old people. She began schools for freed black slaves. This museum in Auburn, New York is dedicated to the memory of her helping others. National Park Service

10 Think About It!  What other people do you know who have continued similar work?  How have the passions of Harriet Tubman affected our country?  What can we do today to continue her work?

11 William “Bill” Cody  Worked on a wagon-train and developed a love for the Plains at an early age.  Rode for the Pony Express and had no fear of Indian battles.  Began entertaining the world with action dramas of his adventures from his experiences in the Wild West. 12 Buffalo Bill Cody Today things are not quite as wild in the west but the memories still live on. Buffalo Bill’s greatest memorial is the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming – a city that he helped create.

13 Think About It!  What other person do you know who has used entertainment to teach?  What do you know about the Wild West and Buffalo Bill?  Do you think life during this time period would work for you?
