Statistics prove that 90% of people stay up late because of (statistics) projects, etc TOO BUSY AT NIGHT? Done by: Cleo Chiong Debra Tay Jean Tan Lieu Whai Peng Ng Jia Yi

Statistics prove that 90% of people stay up late because of (statistics) projects, etc - Insufficient sleep for students in NUSHS, which is evident from: From daily conversations among friends Text messages Through blogs (online diaries) Prevalent in discussion among friends, etc.

Main objective: To find out what causes the students to have insufficient sleep each day Hypothesis: Homework, especially last minute work, is the main reason why students have insufficient sleep each day. Statistics prove that 90% of people stay up late because of (statistics) projects, etc

- Conduct online survey via www.surveymonkey.com www.surveymonkey.com - Target for survey: NUS High School students who had studied in NUS High School for at least a year - Sample size of survey: 121

Statistics prove that 90% of people stay up late because of (statistics) projects, etc 1. In your opinion, how many hours of sleep do you think is required of a student? 2. How often do you sleep less than 7 hours a day in a week? 3. In your opinion, do you have good time management skills? 4. Why do you end up sleeping so late? 5. What kind of homework are usually the one which causes you to stay up late?

6. Do you think it is the amount of homework or the difficulty which amounts to the reason why you do not have sufficient hours of sleep? 7. On average, how many hours of sleep do you have on weekdays? 8. On average, how many hours of sleep do you have on weekends? 9. Are you a male or female? 10. What level are you? Statistics prove that 90% of people stay up late because of (statistics) projects, etc

Q1. The number of times students sleep for a period less than what is required.

Statistics prove that 90% of people stay up late because of (statistics) projects, etc From responses collected, we realized that.. - The majority of respondents(92.6%), had insufficient hours of sleep on a regular basis. - Only 7.4% of the number of students surveyed had never breeched this requirement. - The most common frequency being 5-6 times a week which constituted 35.5% of responses. The least common being ‘never’. - Therefore, the sleeping patterns of students were being adversely affected.

Statistics prove that 90% of people stay up late because of (statistics) projects, etc Q2.In your opinion, how many hours of sleep do you think is required of a student?

Statistics prove that 90% of people stay up late because of (statistics) projects, etc - About half the students gave the ideal answer(48.8%) - Another 33.9% indicating that >8hours are needed - Neglecting possibly untruthful responses, the rest of the students went under the ‘5-6 hour’ category. - This showed that students more or less have at least a rough guide as to the required amount of sleep.

Statistics prove that 90% of people stay up late because of (statistics) projects, etc - Why didn’t students sleep for the amount of time they believed they themselves needed? - Even though about 82.7% of them indicated that an average student (including themselves) needed 7 or more hours of sleep, only 7.4% adhered to it.

Statistics prove that 90% of people stay up late because of (statistics) projects, etc 3. In your opinion, do you have good time manage ment skills?

Statistics prove that 90% of people stay up late because of (statistics) projects, etc What could have resulted in such a situation? We believed that time management made up a crucial point as.. - Problems in this aspect are widespread - Involves many activities - Hence a credible possibility

Statistics prove that 90% of people stay up late because of (statistics) projects, etc Allowing ‘Not sure’ as a response was to prevent forced or uncertain answers, for it would leave a degree of discrepancy. Hence, the main focus was the ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ responses. Only 40% students were sure of their time management skills, a negative response in this case.

Statistics prove that 90% of people stay up late because of (statistics) projects, etc 4. Why do you end up sleeping so late?

Statistics prove that 90% of people stay up late because of (statistics) projects, etc Shows majority of the students do not have sufficient sleep Largely because of rushing homework right before the deadline Poor time management could be a cause for last minute work Should encourage students to do work before playing. Parents should play a part in ensuring a healthy amount of sleep for their children Shows that majority of the students do not have sufficient sleep Largely due to rushing homework right before the deadline Poor time management might have been the underlying problem
