Text Dependent Analysis Writing

What does text dependent analysis mean? Let’s break it down…

Text Dependent means that you must find evidence in the passage to support your thinking. You can’t make it up….you must be able to put your finger on a sentence or sentences in the passage that support your ideas.

Analysis means to pick it apart and think about it deeply. Once you find a piece of evidence, you must analyze or explain it.

Text evidence You can show text evidence in two ways: You may write a direct quote. This is exactly what the author writes with quotation marks around it. Ex: “That particular egg was the one Beterli had marked as his own, and no other candidate dared, on pain of being beaten by Beterli at his first opportunity, to approach it.”

Text evidence You can show text evidence in two ways: You may paraphrase the text. This means putting the text in your own words. Ex: Beterli focused his attention on one egg. The other boys stayed away because they knew Beterli would confront them if they showed interest in it.

Analysis Analysis is not a summary of what happened in the story. It explains the piece of text you pulled out and tells why it supports your thinking. *This is the Explanation in TEEC

Let’s look at a model Star topic sentence Underline examples Highlight explanation #concluding sentence/sentences Box transitions

In the short story “The Smallest Dragonboy,” Anne McCaffrey characterizes Beterli as a cruel boy who bullies Keevan. For example, throughout the story Beterli teases Keevan and calls him “babe” because Keevan is smaller than all of the other boys. Beterli even tells Keevan that dragons won’t pick him because “they’ve got to be able to find you first, babe.” This reveals Beterli is cruel because he tries to intimidate Keevan by comparing him to a helpless, tiny baby. Beterli wants Keevan to feel unworthy of being a dragonrider because he is physically smaller than the other candidates. Next, Beterli tries to trick Keevan by telling him that the younger boys won’t be allowed to participate in the hatching. This reveals Beterli is cruel because he lies to make Keevan worried about his ability to participate. Beterli knows that it will crush Keevan’s heart if he can’t take part in the hatching, and Beterli intends to make Keevan feel isolated and discouraged. Finally, Beterli physically hurts Keevan by ramming a shovel into his chest. This shows that Beterli is cruel because he cannot control his anger and takes his aggression out on Keevan, who is much smaller than him. Beterli breaks his skull and leg, both painful injuries that could have prevented Keevan from making it to the hatching ground to pursue his dream. Beterli is a cruel boy who bullies Keevan because he is insecure about never being chosen as a dragonrider. Perhaps he picks on Keevan to feel powerful and better about himself.
