SBSTA32 Informal Dialogue: Wednesday, June 3 rd 2010, Bonn, Germany Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research Dr. Andrew W. Matthews APN nFP/SPG for New Zealand

Supporting regional cooperation in global change research on issues particularly relevant to the region Strengthening appropriate interactions among scientists and policy-makers, and providing scientific input to policy decision-making and scientific knowledge to the public Improving the scientific and technical capabilities of nations in the region, including the transfer of know-how and technology Cooperating with other global change networks and organisations

New activities focussed under scientific research and capacity development are being undertaken in two of the four new scientific themes highlighted in the Third Strategic Plan (3SP) as follow: NEW ACTIVITIES Theme 2: Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Land Use Key Focus Areas: Forestry and REDD-Plus Theme 4: Resources Utilization and Pathways for Sustainable Development Global change implications of efficient resource utilization Action to establish international sound material cycle society

Focus 1: Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Land Use Understanding basic concepts of REDD-Plus & methodologies for developing REDD-Plus Projects Developing scientific capacity to use the most recent IPCC guidance for estimating emissions & removals Using combination of remote sensing & ground-based forest carbon inventory approaches Related areas of carbon sequestration & dynamics, sustainable forest management practices, etc. Focus 2: Resources Utilisation & Pathways for Sustainable Development Understanding status of scientific research & needs regarding material cycle, efficient resources utilisation, & resource and material management Understanding regional and trans-boundary flow of materials, resources and wastes Development and analysis of material flow accounting Estimation/analysis of indicators on sound material cycle (resource efficiency, resource productivity) Main Topics of Interest

The kinds of activities that may be supported under the above themes include: Activities that maybe supported Identifying and developing existing and/or new methodologies for capacity development, particularly in effective transfer of scientific know-how and technology to user communities, both science and non-science Promoting and strengthening interdisciplinary regional global change research, particularly addressing novel research, and/or identifying key gaps via synthesis and assessment work. Strengthening interfaces between science and policy communities and society in general for effective pathways to sustainable development Encouraging initiatives from developing nations for place- based, integrative research activities. Aligning with other programmes of the global change community

Scientific Capacity Development for Climate Change Impact and Vulnerability Assessment SCBCIA – a focussed activity 7 Ongoing projects Training in the Concepts of Climate Change Impacts and Vulnerability and use of SIMCLIM SCBCIA 2009-FP06-PULHIN: Capacity Building on Integration of Science and Local Knowledge for Climate Change Impacts and Vulnerability Assessments Countries: China Indonesia Philippines Pakistan Viet Nam Thailand

Systematic Observations and Data Management Strengthens current POLICIES in DATA MANAGEMENT Provide access to all data (e.g. metadata) Supports archiving and retrieval of data Stronger relationships with other organizations toward achieving common goals APN GEO ICSU’s CODATA Others Allows download of data from APN-funded project websites

Climate Synthesis Synthesis of climate-related research and capacity development over 10 years 56 completed projects Synthesis report and book will be published in 2011 and 2012 Food, Agriculture and ClimateSeasonal Climate Prediction & ApplicationClimate Variability, Trends and ExtremesRegional Climate Change ModelingVulnerability & Adaptation to Climate ChangeClimate Change MitigationClimate Change Policy & Outreach Focus Chapters APN Climate Synthesis Scoping Meeting 10-11 November 2009 APN Secretariat, Kobe, Japan
