2 INSTRUCTIONAL COMPONENTS STEM Learning Communities – A learning community provides students a convenient schedule of courses that meet general education (G.E.) and transfer requirements. Learning communities link two or more STEM classes together with a common theme, content, and assignments. Learning communities also help students build stronger relationships with faculty and their peers. STEM Faculty Training and Professional Development – Funding is available for conferences and workshops that will improve STEM education and curriculum at MSJC STEM Curriculum Development and Revision – Stipends will be available to faculty who would like to revise existing curriculum or to develop curriculum that meets the mission of STEM grant objectives. 3 INSTRUCTIONAL COMPONENTS STEM Supplemental Instruction – Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program that increases student performance and retention. SI provides weekly review sessions (FREE) to students enrolled in a targeted historically difficult STEM course. SI sessions are interactive review sessions that incorporate course content (what to learn) and study strategies (how to learn). Student attendance is voluntary. Student Learning Outcome and Assessment Development, Implementation and Integration – Systematic methods for data collection and data analysis that are cooperative, outcome-oriented, part of a rigorous scientific design, and intended to impact the decision-making at Mt. San Jacinto College. STEM Faculty Committee – Modeled after the Honors Enrichment Program committee, a STEM faculty committee would help coordinate and execute grant objectives. 4 STUDENT SUCCESS COMPONENTS Modified First Year Experience – Standardized student education plans to determine career and major interests and improve the student identification of educational goal objectives.
