2 ONGOING TRAINING  One of the most frequently cited explanations for a failed foster placement is the inability of the foster parent to manage child behavior problems. This is caused by: 1. A lack of relevant training 2. A lack of professional support 3. A lack of peer support

3 PURPOSE OF TRAINING  Insure foster parents have the knowledge and ability to meet the child’s needs;  Provides general and specific skill development;  Provides a form of support;  Insures retention of foster parents;  Prepare foster parents for future needs;  Provides an opportunity to evaluate the foster parent;

4 TRAINING TOPICS  Policies and Procedures  Child Development  Separation and Loss  Behavior Management  Attachment Issues  Effective Communication  Working as a Team Member  Safety and Supervision  Working with the Biological Family  Conflict Resolution  Understanding Boundaries  Understanding Abuse  Effective Discipline  Sibling Relationships  Cultural Competence  Mental Health Disorders  Promoting Self Care  Health Care  Transition to Independence  Understanding Adoption  Working with Special Needs Children  Dealing with Trauma

5 GROUP EXERCISE #4  Break up into small groups of 3 or 4.  Refer to the child/family matches used in the previous exercise.  Read the case scenarios of each family and make a recommendation for ongoing training to support the family and meet the child’s needs.
