Virtual LE Labs

Anticipation Guide

Learning Goals: To understand the instructional purpose and best practices of using virtual labs and resources To tour and “play with” the various resources and apply them to science labs To plan a lesson or lessons using virtual resources

Agenda I. Introductions, Anticipation Guide, Learning Goals
II. What are Virtual Labs and How do you Create one? III. What Tools are Appropriate to Use When? IV. Overview of Tools V. Play Lunch VI. Use Planning Guide to Create VFT VII. Create VFT

What are virtual labs? Simulate a lab either by having students visit web sites that show different places of interest -- like a webquest An on-line simulation where students click and drag and perform the same laboratory skill sets A compilation of on-line learning resources that take students through media-based information, simulations, animations, etc. that expose them to lab equipment, lab protocol, and lab experiences that parallel “real” lab experiences.

Example DNA Gel Electrophoresis Virtual Lab Podcast – Pre-Lab Immunology Virtual Lab

Important Components:

Tools

First Things First…. Go play on the Internet to get ideas for what type of field trip to take

How to get started Pick a lab topic/concept that would lend itself to virtual labs Begin with the end in mind -- End Outcomes: connected to STANDARDS: What do you want students to be able to do by the end of the lab? Assessment/Evidence of Learning: How will you incorporate literacy? What will it look like? Format? (Will the students read and write? Will the student go to different stops or sites? Will the student explore?) Create the lab itself around your goals and objectives/standards/appendix
