Fireworks Katy Parry Do you ever feel like a plastic bag Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again? Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in? Do you ever feel already buried deep? Six feet under screams but no one seems to hear a thing Do you know that there's still a chance for you 'Cause there's a spark in you? You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine Just own the night like the 4th of July 'Cause baby, you're a firework Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go, oh As you shoot across the sky Baby, you're a firework Come on, let your colors burst Make 'em go, oh You're gonna leave 'em falling down You don't have to feel like a waste of space You're original, cannot be replaced If you only knew what the future holds After a hurricane comes a rainbow Maybe you're reason why all the doors are closed So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road Like a lightning bolt, your heart will blow And when it's time, you'll know You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine Just own the night like the 4th of July 'Cause baby you're a firework Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go, oh As you shoot across the sky Baby, you're a firework Come on, let your colors burst Make 'em go, oh You're gonna leave 'em falling down Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon It's always been inside of you, you, you And now it's time to let it through 'Cause baby you're a firework Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go, oh As you shoot across the sky Baby, you're a firework Come on, let your colors burst Make 'em go, oh You're gonna leave 'em falling down Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon

Verbal Visual Collage Create a verbal-visual collage of the song lyrics provided to illustrate its use of symbolism or imagery. It should consist of both words and images that best illustrate how the imagery and symbolism transforms the everyday. The point of this visual collage is not that you depict each image or symbol exactly. Rather, it is important that you capture their essence in a collection of words and illustrations arranged on the page in a pleasing and creative fashion.

VISUAL COLLAGE TIPS Good collages catch both your eye and your interest. They communicate a clear message through pictures and only the most essential words. Use these tips to help you create an effective collage. Focus on Your Main Point The information contained in your collage must be accurate, clear, and concise. Collages should not contain large amounts of writing. Ask yourself: • What is the main point you plan to make with your collage? • What kinds of pictures and symbols can you use to make your point?

Gather Design Ideas Look through your textbook and other resources to get some design ideas. Advertisements often contain good examples of ways to present information visually. Look for effective ways to combine text and images. Plan Your Design Experiment with different design concepts by making rough pencil sketches to help you place your text and images. As you do so, think about: • what you want to say; • what pictures and symbols convey your message; • the colors and fonts that best convey your ideas; • the best way to organize your pictures, text, and symbols on the collage.

Create Your Visuals Even if your artistic ability is limited, you can create effective visuals. As you work on visuals, remember that: • color will dramatize and bring attention to your collage; • images should be simple and easy to identify; • your images should help carry the message of your collage. Create Your Text If possible, create your text on a computer and then print it on a good printer. Use large, attention-getting fonts that are in proportion to the visuals and to the size of the whole collage. If a computer is not available try to use stencils or carefully hand letter your collage. Finalize Your Design Arrange your images and text on the collage. Adjust the placement of all the elements until you have an eye-catching layout. Then use glue to secure everything in place. The final product must take on a particular shape.

As a group your task is to:
unpack the meaning of the lyrics; identify the poetic derives in the song with textual evidence (a minimum of 3 different poetic devices); brainstorm visual images that come to mind when you read the lyrics; individually create a verbal-visual collage with a one or two paragraph explanation.

At the end of this period you will have completed the song worksheet.
For homework: You will write one or two paragraphs explaining; the poetic devices used in your song, the images and symbols the song creates, the final shape your verbal-visual collage will take. Tomorrows class will be a work period to create your verbal-visual collage. Supplies will be provided, however begin thinking about your collage and bring in any images you would like to use.
