1 What might happen next? Discuss this with your partner. Some students will be asked to share their partner’s prediction – so make sure you listen and ask questions when necessary. Read – Pause – Predict

2 Reflect on the section of the text just completed. Complete a journal entry beginning with one of the following: “This reminds me of…..” “I remember an experience I had like that……” (explain) “ This reminds me of another book / movie I read/saw….” (explain) “ As I read this I was feeling / thinking…” Read – Pause – Make Connections

3 Read – Pause – Discuss Write 3 “fat” questions in your journal about the section of the text just completed. Ask your partner to answer these questions aloud. Some pairs will be asked to share their questions and answers.

4 Read – Pause – Sketch Sketch an idea from the section of the text just completed. Share and discuss your drawing in your group.

5 Read – Pause – Bookmark Review the section of the text just completed. In your journal: 1. Note something interesting or confusing. Explain. 2. Choose three interesting words and define them (use a dictionary and context). 3. Choose a sentence that you feel reflects how one of the characters is feeling at the time. Quote the sentence and explain its importance. 4. Share this with your group.

6 Read – Pause – Retell Retell the section you have just read in your own words. (One PEC paragraph of about five sentences)

7 Read – Pause – Analyse In your journal, reflect on the story so far: 1. Determine which characters are well developed and which are stereotypes or otherwise flat. 2. Choose a minor character and examine the role played by her / him to further the plot. 3. Examine and provide examples of how the author positions you, the reader, to react in a certain way. 4. Discuss possible gaps and silences in the text. 5. Which characters were allowed to speak for themselves? 6. Who do we hear of only through the mouths and minds of others? 7. Discuss your own position on the social issues raised in the text. SHARE YOUR WORK WITH YOUR PARTNER

8 Read-Pause-Reflect In chapter 13, explain the quote, “All my bravado is gone”. Recall a time/incident when you showed bravado.

9 Read-Pause-Predict After reading chapter 15, predict what Katniss’ plan might be.
