2 Educational Solutions for Workforce Development Palliative Care Education Project Living and Dying Well identified that if we are to meet the aims of the national action plan - all staff will need to be equipped with the appropriate knowledge, skills, competence and confidence to deliver appropriate palliative and end of life care.

4 Educational Solutions for Workforce Development Palliative Care Education Project Overall aim of project: To support the implementation of Living and Dying Well by planning and facilitating the development and delivery of education and training for all healthcare professional disciplines; –Project has eight objectives which include, scoping, collaboration, facilitating, developing, supporting and evaluating education initiatives; –Important to note that generalist rather than specialist practitioners are the focus of this initiative, however it is recognised that specialist palliative care expertise will have a role in advising and participating in the development and delivery of education for generalists.

5 Educational Solutions for Workforce Development Project Reference Group A reference group has been established comprised of clinical experts from a range of disciplines and education providers. The group also includes representation from a wide range of care providers including those working with long term conditions, mental health, learning disabilities, children and young people, social care and care homes. The group meets 4 x per year and its function is to; monitor the progress of the education project ensure the establishment of links with other initiatives both within, and external to NES provide information and feedback to inform on the production and delivery of education resources ensure that the direction of the project remains in compliance with the agreed project plan

9 In Summary If care homes are to be recognised as ‘A good place to live and a good place to die’ then they will need to be staffed by health and social care workers who have knowledge, skills, competence and confidence to deliver appropriate palliative and end of life care. The NES Palliative Care work stream will continue to share and disseminate education initiatives with the care home sector to support education and workforce development in palliative and end of life care.
