1 Setting Up Camp Session 1

2 Session Goals Establish a supportive math talk professional learning community Connect proportional reasoning – to the Ontario Mathematics Curriculum Recognize the developmental nature of multiplicative thinking (counting to skip counting to additive thinking in primary grades) as it applies to junior students

3 Create a name tag (glyph) You have an index card and a sheet of paper. On the back of your index card is one of the following words: rate, ratio, percent, fraction, multiplication, or proportion. Complete the following steps on your index card. Hold your card in landscape and fold it horizontally.

4 Before writing the name on the nametag do the following two things: –What is your position in the family? Oldest – write your name in red Youngest – write your name in green Middle – write your name in black Only Child – write your name in blue –Are you in your first five years of teaching? Yes – write in cursive No - write in manuscript

5 Draw the following symbol on your name tag to indicate the month in which you were born: January – snowmanJuly – maple leaf February – heartAugust – sun March – kiteSeptember – apple April – umbrellaOctober – pumpkin May – flowerNovember – poppy June – school with a  December – holly leaf

6 Think about these before putting the border on your name tag: On which day of the month were you born? – Put that many dots in the border of your name tag How many siblings do you have? – Color a line around the edge of your border as follows: 0 – green 1 - blue 2 – purple 3 – yellow 4+ - red

7 Complete your glyph card “Math is like a ________________.” Sketch a picture of your choice of animal that completes the sentence.

8 Publish your glyph Replicate your glyph on your sheet of paper and post it! Retain your index card for future reference.

9 Norms Fearless speaking and listening Always assume a positive intention Bring your burning issues to the camp fire Suffering is optional

10 Big Ideas Camp Flags Building Our Landscape –Read a matching question and discuss how it is associated with the Big Idea –Hang the question under the Big Idea –Explain to the group your thinking

11 Glyph Group Problem Solving On a typical May 24th weekend Joyce noticed both her arms were covered in black fly bites. Cathy said “I think I have twice as many as you do.” How many black fly bites might Cathy or Joyce have? How do you know?

12 Gallery Walk What Big Ideas for Number do you see represented in the solution? Use a marker to put the number on the bottom of the solution
