EURISCO as a tool to assist in gap analysis of ex situ European CWR Sónia Dias Presented at the PGRForum Workshop 2: Threat and Conservation Assessment 27-30 April 2005 Korsör, Denmark

1.Background and objective 2.EURISCO, What it is and what it does 3.EURISCO for CWR 4.Gap analysis with EURISCO 5.Reasons for collecting 6.Prospects Overview Overview

1. Background The EPGRIS project was approved under 5 th Framework programme, thematic Program “Quality Of Life And Management Of Living Resources. The project aimed at establishing an infrastructure for information on plant genetic resources (PGR) maintained ex situ in Europe. This European Inventory is called EURISCO, which stands for European Internet Search Catalogue, and in ancient Greek means "I find". EURISCO was an end product from the EPGRIS project. EURISCO Catalogue is maintained by IPGRI on behalf of ECP/GR.

The objective of EURISCO is to The objective of EURISCO is to Support the creation and providing technical support to National PGR Inventories Develop an European PGR Search Catalogue with passport data on ex situ collections maintained in Europe by: having the possibility to frequently update the catalogue from the National PGR Inventories encouraging easy accessibility via the Internet providing access to all ex situ PGR information in Europe thus facilitate locating and accessing PGR.

EURISCO = European Search Catalogue First regional catalogue of PGR Contains passport information on over 911,000 accessions Provides access to information on PGR maintained in Europe Facilitates locating germplasm material Facilitates the access to germplasm material Updated through the National Inventories (NI) These data comes from 27 PGR Inventories, covering 31 European countries. 2. What it is and what it does

Roles 1.Responsible of data sources & merges 2.Ensure data quality & accuracy 3.Decide on data availability 4.Commit to provide data in the EURISCO-MCPD data format National 1.Responsible of data checking of NI 2.Provide feedback to National Partners 3.Import NI data in EURISCO 4.Develop and maintain front end Central

 Data format (for the time being tab delimited)  Essential descriptors  NICODE  INSTCODE  ACCENUMB  GENUS  Line per Line checking  Uploading report generated  Data provider contacted for approval…. Organization (data protocols)

Essential !!! Detailed checking Basic checking No real checking (for the time being)  Line per Line checking  Required Descriptors  Descriptors coded  Sample status  Collecting source  With INSTCODE (BREDCODE…)  Descriptors semi-coded  Dates  Coordinates  Descriptors un-coded  Taxonomy ...

Database software: MySQL (http://www.mysql.com) Scripting language: PHP (http://www.php.net) Web server: Apache (http://www.apache.org) EURISCO central node is developed with free software. EURISCO should be able to run on most OS (Linux, Windows, Mac…) All developments including codes are freely accessible. Organization (data protocols)

4. Gap analysis with EURISCO Generally and for this purpose consider two main Phases Phase I – Identify Gap Set up your gap questions Phase II – Fill gap Set up plans/recommendations/actions Yes.No. Not applicable. Use EURISCO  no action required XGap identified = action required X Gap identified = action required = no action required = no action required

Spatial data Predicting Species Distribution Use GIS based packages for visualization, analysis and management of PGR data Administrative maps Present and future climate surfaces Protected area maps Environmental maps Human impact maps

Using spatial data DIVA-GIS http://diva-gis.org/program.htm General system intended to visualize spatial distribution of biological collections http://www.floramap-ciat.org/ Principal components analysis coupled with a probability model Cluster analysis also can refine result and identify different adaptations in organism Domain http://www.cifor.cgiar.org/scripts/default.asp?ref=research_tools/domain/index.htm Generates maps of similarity or distance from the conditions at known points of presence, using the Gower metric method.

Species distribution maps Information on adaptation of germplasm Diversity hotspots maps Areas of genetic erosion Gaps in collections Spatial targeting and prioritization for collecting, conservation and use Accession passport data allows:

5. Reasons for collecting Diversity is missing or under- represented in ex situ collections Gap Filling Gap Analysis Areas inadequately coveredAreas inadequately covered Under represented agro/ecological conditionsUnder represented agro/ecological conditions Missing or under-represented genotypes and taxaMissing or under-represented genotypes and taxa

Better planned ecogeographic surveys Better decision making on what collecting needs are concerned Support the establishment and revision of management plans Contribute to recommend sites for new PA’s Identify hotspots for diversity. EURISCO a tool evolving to: 6. Prospects

Support the implementation of restoration actions Contributes to plan regeneration and evaluation activities Contribute to decision making Contributes to biodiversity use and conservation Increase public awareness on PGR Reinforce link with integrated management systems. EURISCO a tool evolving to: 6. Prospects
