2 Instant Activity  Each Day you make decisions that affect your health. What you choose to eat, your level of physical activity, how you manage stress, and the types of relationships you have all influence your overall feeling of well-being.  Make a list of 5 decisions you’ve made this week that have had a positive effect on your health.

5 Get into a group of 4  Compare and discuss each group members sentence.  As a group compose one ending to “When you have good health, you…”  Share the sentence with the class

6 In this lesson you will learn to…  Understand your personal health and where you fall on the health continuum  How your decisions affect your personal wellness  Discuss the importance of health literacy for achieving and maintaining good health

7 Why Health Education?  Health is critical to quality of life. Learning how to become and stay healthy should be a top priority for you! Health Education: Providing of accurate health information to help people make healthy choices.

8 My Goal as a Health Educator  Is to provide you with the tools that you need to live a long, energetic, and productive life.

9 The Importance of Good Health Health- is the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being Wellness- an overall state of well being, or total health.

10 The Health Continuum  Health is dynamic, or subject to constant change.  Think of your health as a spot along a continuum.  This continuum spans the complete spectrum from chronic disease and premature death to a high level of health.

11 The Health Continuum The continuum shows that your health can be measure on a sliding scale, with many degrees of health and wellness.

12 Promoting your Health  Lifestyle Factors that promote good Health  8-10 hours of sleep  Eating a healthy breakfast  Eating a variety of nutritious foods each day  At least 30 minutes of physical activity each day  Maintaining a healthy body weight

13 Lifestyle Factors Continued  Avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs  Managing stress  Maintaining POSITIVE relationships  Practicing safe behaviors  Practicing these factors into your life will help ensure a high level of wellness

14 Prevention A key to your wellness is Prevention Prevention is practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury. –Wearing safety belts –Applying sun screen –Avoiding unsafe areas What are other actions you can take to prevent illness and injury?
