2 Audio Check Let’s conduct a quick audio check. If you can’t hear me, please confirm that the volume on your speakers are on and if you have external speakers confirm that they are plugged in. 3 Review of Unit 7 Last week we learned about professional development and it’s importance and your trusted friend Spartacus shared tips on critical thinking and problem solving.. Does anyone have any questions? Thoughts? Ah ha moments?

4 Unit 8: What is Professional Development? We touched upon this last week, but will learn a lot more this week. Professional development is a contributor to high quality early childhood interactions. Your readings this week will allow you to look at your own state and the requirements for minimum pre-service qualifications for childcare personnel. In addition to being current with trends in the field, it is important to be aware of the resources available to you here at Kaplan, so Spartacus will share more tips for you. He will share many of the resources that our university has to offer you. Are you ready to begin?

5 Outcomes After completing this unit, you should be able to: Identify the importance of professional organizations within the field Locate and explore the KU Resources—Arts and Sciences Resource Center

6 Please Share What is Professional Development? Why is it important? We answered this last week… but have you learned anything new to add? Jump in!

7 KU Student Workshops Did you know that our department offers monthly professional development opportunities? We do!!! Each month your instructors in all of you CE courses will post them as Announcements. Please feel free to attend as many as you wish. In addition, we have a Math Center, a Writing Center, and our Science Department is working on a Science Center too! Workshops are posted as announcements as well.

8 Thoughts? Have you attended any of the FREE workshops? If so, what did you think? Do you see yourself attending any? Is there an area in which you would like to see a workshop?

11 Just a Few Reminders… Please be sure to read the announcements that I post in class. If you have extenuating circumstances that prevent you from completing projects or participating in the class, please contact me as soon as possible as I do worry about my students. 12 Graded Reviews This week you will have one graded review. Please use the readings as well as the tips from Spartacus to assist you in answering the questions. Take your time, you have two hours to complete each review.

13 Please remember that our class runs from Wednesday through Tuesday! ALL work for unit 8 is due on Tuesday at midnight! This week you will: Complete the Readings – Enjoy a visit from Spartacus Complete the Learning Activities Share and participate in the discussion Complete one graded review Take a Peek at the Unit 9 Project and Ask Questions And either attend Live Seminar or Complete Option 2. Any questions? Unit 8– Things to do!

14 A Peek at the Unit 9 Project This term we have learned about the roles, responsibilities, and various career opportunities within the field, and as we explored each career opportunity, we discussed standards, strategies, and professional standards. For your Unit 9 Project, you will write a 1-2 page essay sharing how the role of the early childhood professional is different from what it was in the past. A template is provided… please use it! Please also use the Rubric which is posted on your syllabus.

15 In Your Project, You Will… Identify how professionalism, personal characteristics, responsibilities, expectations, and roles have changed. Explain some of the new roles the early childhood professional should anticipate. Share how historical events, theorists, or legislation have influenced these changes. Any questions?
