4 Unit 2: The Roles and Responsibilities of a Child Development Professional In this unit you will visit a few websites to learn more about the roles of an early childhood professional, enjoy a visit from Spartacus to learn tips for personal management, attend seminar, share in a discussion, and complete two graded reviews. You will identify your learning style and identify how your passions will motivate you in your success as an online student and in your career as an early childhood professional! Are you ready to begin?

5 Unit Outcomes After completing this unit, you should be able to: Identify career choices and job titles in the field of early childhood development Explore the needs that professionals in the field of early childhood development are employed to address on behalf of their clients

6 The Roles Vary The roles and responsibilities of an individual with a career in child development vary depending on the types of setting in which they work. However, one thing is for sure: individuals working with young children need to treat the children equally while providing them with the different needs that they require. Regardless of your career, you may be responsible for caring for and educating children when parents/guardians are at work or away for other reasons. In addition to attending to children’s basic needs, you may have to organize activities that stimulate children’s physical, emotional, intellectual, and social growth and development and assist them in exploring their interests, developing their talents and independence, building their self- esteem, and learning how to get along with others. In addition, you will have open communication and dialogue with parents/guardians.

7 Roles, Responsibilities, and Needs of a Child Development Professional This week you will read about the roles that professionals in the field early childhood development play in the populations they serve, and the needs they address.  The field of early childhood development consists of countless services, which include programs for infants and toddlers, preschool programs, family childcare, childcare centers, kindergarten, and schooling for primary age children. Each has the potential to foster healthy development and learning as well as positively impact children’s lives; however, each of these require professionals to have similar characteristics as they partake in the role of working with children and their families.  The roles and responsibilities of an individual with a career in child development vary depending on the types of setting in which they work. In addition, you will learn tips on how to manage your time and stress to be able to meet the roles and responsibilities.

8 Discussion Board Virtual Field Trip There are many career opportunities in the field of early childhood development. Many of them can be found on O*Net: http://online.onetcenter.org/link/summary/21-1011.00. Enjoy and explore! Then, pick one of the jobs that interests you. Each of the following is covered in the job you have selected in O*Net. In reviewing your choice, discuss each of the following and why you think you could be well matched to this profession: Tasks, Tools, & Technology Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Work Activities and Context Wages & Employment Trends, State and National Availability A PDF for Unit 2 is available in the Doc Sharing on Learning Styles. Read the PDF and then reflect back on the reading and share how your learning style will assist you in your role of the career/job that you highlighted.

9 Career Opportunities…. We will review our readings for the week and we will discuss the jobs available in the field of early childhood development. We will discuss work environments, educational and licensing requirements, salaries and job prospects. Be prepared to highlight information on the careers that you read about. What job prospect sounded appealing to you? What type of organization would you like to work in? What is the salary range for this position?
