2 I. Religion and Society Cistercian order – monks who farmed (Bernard of Clarivaux) Many women enter convents between 1000-1200 to become nuns. Friars are different than monks, they beg for food and travel the world preaching. Francis of Assisi – founded the first order of friars Daily life revolved around the Catholic Church.

3 Priests conducted religious services, ran schools and hospitals, performed weddings and funerals and recorded births. Saints were holy men and women that had died. Catholic Church tried to end heresy.  Inquisition – urged people to confess their heresy.

4 Leaders of the Catholic Church persecuted Jews.  Jews were blamed for the economic problems  Anti-Semitism caused many Jews to move to Poland and other eastern European countries

8 Thomas Aquinas was famous for his scholasticism.  Combined church teaching with Aristotle.  Wrote about natural law Latin was the language of the educated. Vernacular literature began in the middle ages.
