3 Before you Begin! Remember that you can have as many Causes and Effects as needed. Do not limit yourself to the 3 boxes on the template. You can also create a Multi-flow Map using only the Causes and the Event, or the Event and the Effects.

6 Step #1 In the large center box write the Event being discussed. You can use a word, picture or symbol to represent the topic or concept.

8 Step #2 Have the students discuss and fill-in the Causes of the event. Be specific and use details. Remember you can list as many Causes as necessary.

12 Step #4 The outer rectangle is called the Frame of Reference. This encourages more reflective thinking on the topic. This is the opportunity to go into greater depth. The students are thinking about their thinking!

13 Step # 4 Suggestions Listed below are some sample questions that could be asked in the Frame of Ref: – How do you know the causes and effects of this event? –How does this information relate to the standard and objective? –Did a specific time period influence the causes and effects? –Where did you get your information?

15 Step #4 Have the students respond to the Frame of Reference (question or idea) within the rectangular outline. This is also a nice opportunity to have them share and discuss how they would answer the question(s)?
