Setting up E-Mail Web-based or Local Computer Program

Web-based E-Mail Accounts (like hotmail or yahoo)  Sign up online and access through the Internet from anywhere.  Mail is left on mailserver in your account.  You can download attachments or other files to your computer.  Address book and other information are stored on the web.  Free accounts have to be used every so often or they are set inactive.  You can reactivate the accounts if necessary.  Advertising and pop-ups may come with free e-mail accounts.  Antivirus scan of incoming and outgoing mail is usually done through the webserver.  You can pay a fee per year to keep your account active, add storage or services like spam-detector.

ISP (Internet Service Provider) accounts – aol.com, earthlink.net, cchs165.jacksn.k12.il.us Some might have option to logon via the web and keep files on webserver, but most have to be set up on local computer. Common programs – Outlook Outlook Express Netscape Eudora

You can set your password so that you have to enter it each time, or you can have it remember your password. Be careful of the latter, because anyone using your computer can get your e-mail. Under Tools, Accounts – Set in the information from your ISP: Your name, e-mail address, Incoming mail server (POP3) and Outgoing mail server (SMTP).

E-mail on your computer (cont’d) When you use this type of e-mail program, you may have to hit a send & receive button each time you use your mail. All messages, address book, deleted mail, etc. will be stored on the local computer where it was retrieved. If you set up a second computer for the same mail address, you will not see the same messages or addresses. When your delete a message it goes to a trashcan or deleted items folder. Make sure you empty that every so often. This type of e-mail is also the most likely to bring in viruses. This can happen when you view a mail message or download an attachment. Don’t open e- mail from unknown or suspect addresses, particularly if they have an attachment.

Other Options Web-based access to any account: www.web2mail.com www.web2mail.com You can put in your e-mail account and password and get any new e-mail from the Internet and sometimes have options to erase mail.
