To deliver a working UK Virtual Observatory based on key UK astronomical data sets placing the UK in a leading position in the international development of virtual observatories and in the development of a European Grid infrastructure. Funds from 2004/05

10 Science Committee Priorities: “ further development of the infrastructure being deployed by Astrogrid and GridPP, establishment of an applications- driven e-science programme, for example LHC data analysis, data centres for ESA missions, and establishment of an integrated solar system modelling” (Council) Want to see full project costs - Scientifically peer reviewed by PPRP - GSC advise on projects/programme - Final programme approval rests with Science Committee

12 2003 e-Science Call (II) Applications Development Software required for the LHC experiments Projects leading to full exploitation of the first LHC data in 2007. => Bids from experiments ? Astronomical Data Processing. Data processing pipelines and analysis software for approved missions e.g. VISTA, Gaia and Eddington (?) (ESO) Integrated Solar System Modeling. Spine, data assimilation and visualisation.

13 Proposals Support approved PPARC Science programme Individual institutions or consortia Coordinated solution to one or more of the above challenges. Collaboration between different sciences and/or industries particularly encouraged. Bringing together the relevant expertise. Full commitment to and involvement in the UK and International e-Science. Key roles in the UK e-Science programme, EU and other international projects Evidence of national and international leadership Supported by significant local investment in relevant infrastructure and expertise. Show how developments build upon PPARC’s existing investment in e-Science Key international partners such as CERN, ESO, and relevant projects in the US/Asia. Where appropriate, commit to support for centres for the full duration of the PPARC science projects. Full project costs to completion with justified resources and management plan.
