2 OVERVIEW Welcome to GarageBand Create a new project –Introductory music, open title sequence Go over parts of main window Add Apple loops Revisit parts of main window Build a song arrangement in the timeline Edit recordings in the editor Record voice using Mac mic Build your own song

3 CREATE A NEW PROJECT Launch GarageBand (GB) At new project window select Piano Click Choose

4 CREATE A NEW PROJECT New Project Template Lets discuss After discussion, keep default tempo, signature, and key, Save As tvShowOpen.band click Create

5 OVERVIEW of WINDOW Identify parts and operations

6 TIMELINE Contains tracks where you record instruments, add loops, arrange regions Includes beat ruler Used to align playhead Used to align items in timeline

7 TRACK HEADERS Instrument icon and name (editable) Click “Record enable” (red circle) to turn the track on for recording (or off) Click “Mute” (speaker icon) to silence track Click “Solo” (headphones) to hear the track by itself Click “Lock Track” button (padlock) to lock the track (not editable) Click the triangle to show track’s automation curves Drag pan dial to adjust pan (left-to-right placement in stereo field) Drag volume slider to adjust track’s volume and watch level meter when you record and play

8 ZOOM SLIDERS Drag the zoom slider to zoom in for closer view of part of the timeline or to zoom out to see more of the timeline

9 ADD TRACK & EDITOR BUTTONS Click the “Add track” (plus sign) button to add a track below the existing tracks in timeline Click the “Editor” button (scissors) to show/hide the editor

10 TRANSPORT CONTROLS Click the “Record button” (red circle) to start recording Click the “Play button” (triangle) to start or stop playback Click the Go To Beginning, Rewind, or Fast Forward buttons to move the playhead to different parts of project Click the “Cycle” (two circular arrows) to turn the cycle region on/off

11 LCD Five Modes –Time, Measures, Chord, Tuner, and Project –Click the icon on the left side to choose a different mode Time Mode –LCD shows playhead position in hours, minutes, seconds, fractions –Drag or double-click the numerals to move playhead Measures Mode –LCD shows playhead’s position in musical time (measures, beats, ticks) –Drag or double-click the numerals to move playhead Chord Mode –You can see chord symbols when you play any Software instrument Tuner Mode –Tune either electric guitar or real instrument track Project Mode –Choose different key and time signature, change tempo

12 MASTER VOLUME & LEVEL METERS Drag the volume slider to adjust the project’s master level Watch the level meter to see if clipping is occurring before you export

13 LOOP BROSWER… Click “Loop Browser” (Eye) to open loop browser Click “Track Info” (i) to open the Track info pane Click “Media Browser” to open the media browser (photos, songs, …)

14 TERMS THAT CAME UP Software instrument vs. real instrument –GB has computer-based instruments in the software –Real instrument means you are recording through a mic Clipping –Means the level meter went from green through yellow into red; red means clipping/distortion, bad audio Region –Any section of audio in a timeline that GB knows has a start and end point (drag-able, editable)

15 ADD APPLE LOOPS Select the piano track if not presently selected Hold mouse down on “Grand Piano” until it becomes highlighted; replace with “Drums01” Click on the button to show the Loop Browser which is the what button? Make the Loop Browser look like picture below left; choose Major, All Drums Click on Tempo to organize by bmp Scroll down to find all the 120 tempo drums Find “Funky Pop Drum 01” & Drag to timeline of Drums01 track at beginning of tune; below right; tap space bar to play and again to stop playback

16 LETS REVIEW This is what? How many seconds long is Funky Pop Drum 01? How can you answer that? How many measures is it?

17 LETS GO ON Click on the region to select it (turns darker green) From Edit menu choose Copy Move playhead to end of first region From Edit menu choose Paste Go back to Loops Browser drag Funky Pop Drum 07 to become third region Playback all three regions from start

18 LETS GO ON Click and drag 01 and 01 (2 nd ) to right of 07 Move 07 to start at beginning, drag 01 and 01 (2 nd ) back into position Copy and paste 07 to become the fourth region Playback

19 LETS GO ON AGAIN Click Add track button Choose Real Instrument (below) Rename track “Bass” How do you rename?

20 LETS GO ON SOME MORE In Loop Browser click on Bass In search field at bottom type in Groovy Electric Bass…we want 05 Notice that these loops have blue icon with waveform…this is real audio, not software like our drum tracks which had green icon Drag Groovy Electric Bass 05 to our Bass track, drop at start of second drum region Spacebar to playback

21 LETS GO ON SOME MORE Repeat so that the bass track has three regions of 05

22 BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE New software track, call it keyboards Loops browser Fusion Electric Piano 01 Drag it first to start, then again right after first region How come we only need 2 regions to span our entire song so far and we needed 4 drum regions and 4 bass regions? Drag keyboards track header volume slider to -10db or thereabouts Playback

23 LET’S REVIEW We made a new project We added new tracks We added software and real instrument loops We copy and pasted loops We dragged and dropped loops We rearranged regions in timeline We change level of one track

24 LET’S KEEP GOING On Elec Piano Track, select track Click Edit button (scissors) This is midi-we need to talk

25 EDITING MIDI I like the drum track alone for first 3.9 seconds (after the snare fill) Then I want the bass and keyboards to enter at same time So we will delete all the keyboard midi data up to that point Position cursor on upper most part of edit window, you will see a hand, drag window up toward top of screen to enlarge Scroll up and down to have all the midi data from 0 seconds to 4 seconds centered in window Use cursor to select all midi from 0 to 3 seconds Press delete key See pictures next slide

27 Click on Scissors tool to hide editing Notice edits to keyboard track Playback

28 ADDING AUTOMATION Click triangle in Bass track to show automation Show Track Volume by clicking selection box Drag zoom level to right to enlarge regions Click on track volume line right before last visible audio wave on bass track Move cursor slightly to right click on track volume again and drag line up to increase track volume Bass will finish with a flurry Playback

29 EDITING AUDIO Select third region of bass track Click Scissors Select last two pulses of base audio waveform Cut the last two beats/pulses New Track, real instrument Place playhead at same spot cut started Paste last two beats

30 ADD EFFECT TO AUDIO Show Track Info (i) Select bass, then Punk Bass Playback

31 LET’S REVIEW MIDI Edited MIDI Added Automation Edited Audio Added Effect to Audio

32 MORE, MORE, MORE Use zoom tool to see all 16 seconds of every track Put LCD into Time mode Double-click on seconds then type in 18, press return Double click on ticks (to right of decimal) type 0 then press enter Playhead went to 18 second mark Use cursor to select all tracks Copy Paste Put cursor at 16 second mark; use time mode Add new track fill the opening in Drum track with 2 regions of loop called “Funky Electric Guitar 05” Automate volume of new Gtr 05 track down when drums re-enter

33 MORE, MORE, MORE

34 STILL MORE, MORE, MORE Select new guitar track Bring up Track Info Click on Edit Noise Gate and Compressor effects by default Click on next row to add new effect Select Amp Simulation Select American Clean Leave defaults Playback

35 FINALLY Track Menu, New Track Position cursor at end of last audio (time = 34.291) On transport press record and speak into Mac one sentence “welcome to today’s episode” May have to check sound input to internal mic (Mac OS system preferences) May have to set GB preferences, GB menu, Preferences, Audio/Midi to System Settings

36 BUILD A SONG Your turn Create a new project Anywhere from 15 to 30 seconds total Multiple tracks Pick a genre is easiest Pick a key, pick a tempo Build it –I used an intro, break, outro format –Also, intro, refrain, outro would work –Include automation –Include one effect –Include at least one edit –Volunteers to SHARE WITH CLASS
