Into Sport Year one of the project Funded by

Aims of the Day Our overall aim of the day is to share our learning from the first year of Into Sport. Specifically: 1.To explore the barriers that prevent Deaf and Disabled people from accessing sport and physical activity (SPA) 2.To explore some solutions that are emerging through this work 3.How we can progress these findings and develop specific resources

The Five DDPO Partners

Source: Sport England, September 2013

The core objective of Into Sport is to get more Deaf and Disabled people active by: 1.Embedding sport and physical activity – SPA – into the support offered by Disabled people’s organisations 2.Identifying – and working to remove - barriers preventing Disabled people from accessing mainstream SPA.

Successes 172 non-active people into sport New partnerships with a wide range of SPA providers Increased involvement of DDPOs in planning and strategy development DDPOs starting to embed SPA within their core offer

Four Themes

1. Many Disabled people don’t feel that SPA is relevant to them or a viable lifestyle choice Change views of what sport is Raise the profile of Disabled people involved in SPA, including staff and coaches View people’s needs holistically What can we do?

2. Participants often need personalised support to overcome confidence issues in trying out sport One-to-one or group support for initial visits Peer support Specialist disability sessions, including personalised support These don’t necessarily lead to sustained activity unless structural barriers are addressed What can we do?

3. Specific access barriers What are they? The need for ongoing support with travel to and/or doing SPA The need for specialist equipment and understanding of subtle access barriers Non-accessible publicity Lack of available coaches with appropriate skills, experience and awareness

4. S uccessfully embedding SPA advice and support within DDPOs Include it in advice, advocacy and brokerage Integrate it with other services Social media Peer group approaches Dedicated publicity What can we do?
