If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn't sit for a month. Theodore Roosevelt

NEWTON’S FIRST LAW: A OBJECT IN MOTION WILL TEND TO REMAIN IN MOTION, AND AN OBJECT AT REST WILL TEND TO REMAIN AT REST UNLESS ACTED UPON BY AN OUTSIDE FORCE. THIS IS ABOUT INERTIA – THE TENDENCY OF AN OBJECT TO RESIST ACCELERATION. SOMETIMES, NEWTON’S FIRST LAW IS CALLED THE LAW OF INERTIA.

IN THE ABOVE DIAGRAM, THE FORCES ARE BALANCED. GRAVITY IS PULLING THE BOOK DOWNWARD, AND THE TABLE IS PUSHING THE BOOK UPWARD. THE BOOK IS AT REST.

IF THE BOOK WERE MOVING TO THE RIGHT AT 2 m/sec IN A STRAIGHT LINE AND THERE WAS NO FRICTION, THE FORCES WOULD STILL BE BALANCED. IT MAY HAVE GOTTEN A PUSH EARLIER, BUT THE VELOCITY IS NOT CHANGING (NO ACCELERATION), SO THE FORCES ARE BALANCED. THE NET FORCE IS ZERO.

If the forces acting upon an object are balanced, then the object a. must not be moving. b. must be moving with a constant velocity. c. must not be accelerating. d. none of these

IT SAYS THAT THE ACCELERATION OF AN OBJECT IS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO THE FORCE APPLIED AND INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL TO THE MASS. a = F/m OR F =ma FORCE IS EQUAL TO MASS TIMES ACCELERTATION.

NEWTON’S THIRD LAW STATES THAT FOR EVERY ACTION, THERE IS AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITE REACTION. IN OTHER WORDS, FORCES COME IN PAIRS. IF YOU ARE PUSHING ON THE BOTTOM OF YOUR CHAIR BECAUSE OF THE PULL OF GRAVITY, THE CHAIR IS PUSHING BACK WITH AN EQUAL FORCE. FORCES ARE BALANCED, SO YOU SIT STILL.
