6 New Legislation Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act was signed April 21, 2009. The Serve America Act will expand opportunities for Americans to serve by dramatically increasing AmeriCorps from its current 75,000 to 250,000 by 2017.

7 Disadvantaged Youth The Serve America Act defines “disadvantaged youth” as those youth who are economically disadvantaged and one or more of the following: Who are out-of-school youth, including out-of-school youth who are unemployed. Who are aging out of foster care. Who have limited English proficiency. Who are homeless or who have run away from home. Who are at-risk to leave secondary school without a diploma. Who are former juvenile offenders or at risk of delinquency. Who are individuals with disabilities.

9 Selection and Placement NCCC uses a demographic survey to identify youth from disadvantaged circumstances within our applicant pool who do not come to us from our recruitment partners. The survey is used to identify: Economically Disadvantaged Free and Reduced Lunch Zip Codes Serve America Act Criteria

15 AmeriCorps NCCC is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering. NCCC offers service opportunities to those 18-24 without regard to race, color, national origin, disability, gender, sexual orientation, religion, political affiliation, and other non-merit factors. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or lawful, permanent resident aliens.
