Spreading of ideas to promote a cause or to damage opposing cause

Recruitment of Soldiers Financing the war Unifying the country Conserving resources Participation on the Home Front Recruitment of Soldiers Financing of war through the sale of War Bonds (loans from citizens to the government) Unifying the country behind the war effort Conserving resources Participation in home-front organizations to support the war effort

4 Tools of Propaganda Demonization Emotional Appeals
Name Calling Examples: “Commies” and “Huns” Patriotic Appeals Demonization – portraying the enemy as purely evil. Tells the viewer exactly who to hate. Enemy may be shown as a hairy beast or the devil himself Emotional Appeals – plays on peoples emotions, especially fear Name Calling – labels to encourage hatred of the enemy. Examples: “Commies” and “Huns” reinforce negative stereotypes Patriotic Appeals – using patriotic symbols or language to appeal to national pride

Half-Truths or Lies Catchy Slogans Example: “Remember the Maine” Evocative Visual Symbols Examples: flags, statues, mothers and children, and enemy uniforms Humor or Caricatures Half-Truths or Lies – twisting the truth to make an argument more persuasive. Catchy Slogans – memorable phrases, such as “Remember the Maine” Evocative Visual Symbols – symbols that appeal to people’s emotions. Examples: flags, statues, mothers and children, and enemy uniforms Humor or Caricatures – the enemy is almost always the butt of the jokes
