Graphing Objective: I can formulate and answer questions by interpreting graphs.

Essential Questions What are the different types of graphs? How would you analyze data based on a particular graph? What are the different types of graphs? How can we use graphs to formulate and answer questions, and draw conclusions. I am going to ask questions about each of the following graphs. I did not put questions in presentation in case you wanted to get through it quicker:)

Tally Charts Tally charts compare data using tally marks. 5th Graders Favorite Ice Cream Flavors

Frequency Table Student Lunch Choices Frequency tables show the number of times a given item was selected or occurred. Hint: It is just like a tally chart, but uses numbers instead. Tacos36 Pizza15 Chicken Nuggets 28 Sandwich7 Nachos29

Venn Diagrams 5th Graders Favorite Pizza Flavors PepperoniCheese Sausage 51 45 16 8 15 14 20 Venn diagrams compare and contrast several items. All and Hint: If a question asks for all it is the number in the middle. Hint: If a question uses the word Cheese and one more. You should look here!

Circle Graphs Traffic in NY Circle graphs compare items out of a total group. Percents always add up to 100%. This graph shows the types of traffic in New York City. The comparison is made by using percents. Question: What percent of traffic is wheelbarrows and trucks?

Bar Graphs Bar graphs compare the quantity of given items. This graph compares the number of different types of pets on my street.

Line Graphs Line graphs compare an item over time. This graph compares the number of potatoes eaten in a week. **Line graphs show data over a period of time!!!

Let’s Review 1) What type of graph would you use to show the temperatures of A CITY OVER A WEEK? 2) What type of graph would you use if your data was percents out of 100? 3) What type of chart uses tally marks? 4) What type of chart shows how often something happened? 5) What type of graph would you use to compare students’ lunch choices?

Closure Turn to your shoulder partner and describe the difference between a circle graph and a venn diagram.
