Warm-Up #2 1.What type of graph(s) shows data by using X ’ s? 2.What type of graph(s) shows data by using bars? 3.What type of graph(s) shows data with points connected by lines? 4.What type of graph(s) shows data with pictures or portions of pictures?

Warm-Up #2 1.What was the most popular shoe color in Mrs. Robinson’s class? 2.What is the title of the graph? 3.How many students are represented in this graph? 4.How many more students wore white shoes than brown shoes? 5.How many students wore black, blue or brown shoes?

1. Open your agenda to your Behavior Card. 2. Put Computation Challenge graph under “Work in Progress” and plot your score. 3. Take out “Rolling Out a Stem and Leaf Plot” activity. Finish constructing your stem and leaf and answering the questions. Turn into the tray. Make sure your name is on it! 4. Set up two pages for Cornell Notes. August 16, 2010

Bar Graph VS. Histogram “Let’s get ready to rumble!”

What am I Learning Today? Bar graphs Histograms How will I show that I learned it? Compare and Contrast Compare and Contrast bar graphs and histograms using a Venn Diagram. Createand analyze Create and analyze a histogram.

Vocabulary Bar Graph: Graph that uses bars to display and compare data in separate categories. Histogram: A bar graph that shows the number of data items that occur within each interval. Scale: A series of numbers that includes all the data values Interval: Separates the scale into equal parts

Turn to a partner and discuss differences you see in these two graphs. Number of Students Number of Laps Run 10–14 0–4 5–9 8 6 4 2 0 15–19 Number of Laps bar graphhistogram

BAR GRAPH HISTOGRAM both - Bars are separated and equally spaced apart - Can display categorical and numerical data - Bars touch - Can display only numerical data - Uses intervals - Have a title and labels - Use a scale - Use bars

QuestionsAnswers What do all graphs have in common? Title, axes labels, and a scale What is the purpose of a histogram? Show frequency of occurrences within each interval What kind of data is best suited for a histogram? Mostly large sets of numerical data What is the purpose of a bar graph? Compare quantities in different categories What kind of data is best suited for a bar graph? Mostly categorical data that can be compared individually, but numerical data can also be represented in this way. Can a histogram have intervals of 0-5, 5-10, 10-15? No; intervals cannot share a value and must include the same amount of data

Paired Discussion Turn to a partner and discuss the following: Why is a histogram more appropriate than a bar graph for displaying the following data? Pages Read Last Weekend 121540197 532372718

Group Discussion 1.What scale was used? Why? 2.How many data values are in each interval? 3.What conclusions can you draw from this graph? Explain.

Helpful Hints for Constructing a Histogram Make sure the bars are all the same width All intervals must be used, even if there was no data collected Choose an appropriate scale according to your frequencies Label the axes accurately (what does the information describe) Use a ruler for neat work
