2 Our society continues to consume and dispose of many things each day that end up in the landfill. Many of the things we consider “garbage” are actually valuable materials which have not lived out their full life cycle. If our waste was properly disposed of, We could turn mountains of trash into new products, compost, and even energy. About one-third of an average dump is made up of packaging material! Every year, each American throws out about 1,200 pounds of organic garbage that can be composted. The U.S. is the #1 trash-producing country in the world at 1,609 pounds per person per year. This means that 5% of the world's people generate 40% of the world's waste. The highest point in Hamilton County, Ohio (near Cincinnati) is "Mount Rumpke." It is actually a mountain of trash at the Rumpke sanitary landfill towering 1045 ft. above sea level. Rumpke Sanitary Landfill- Ohio Fresh Kills Landfill- New York

5 The total volume of solid waste produced in the U.S. each year is equal to the weight of more than 5,600 Nimitz Class air craft carriers, 247,000 space shuttles, or 2.3 million Boeing 747 jumbo jets (Beck). If we put all of the solid waste collected in the U.S. in a line of average garbage trucks, that line of trucks could cross the country, extending from New York City to Los Angeles, more than 100 times (Beck). Every ton of paper recycled saves more than 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space. (http://earth911.org) Glass can be recycled an indefinite number of times and never wears out. (National Recycling Coalition) If we recycled all the newspapers printed in the U.s on a typical Sunday, we would save 550,000 trees, or about 26 million tree per year. (CA Department of Conversation) Five PET bottles (plastic soda bottles) yield enough fiber for one extra large T-shirt, one square foot of carpet, or enough fiber to fill one ski jacket. (Nation Recycling Coalition) America’s solid waste industry currently operates 87 waste-to-energy facilities that generate approximately 17 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy per year- enough to power an estimated 1.7 million homes. (Energy Recovery Council, 2008) The US population discards each year 16,000,000,000 diapers, 1,600,000,000 pens, 2,000,000,000 razor blades, 220,000,000 car tires, and enough aluminum to rebuild the US commercial air fleet four times over. Packaging represents about 65% of household trash.
