1  Take out your HW  In one sentence, describe President McKinley term in office.  How did he differ from President Roosevelt?

2  Why construct the Panama Canal?  Short-cut connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.  Commercial & Military Ships  Panamanian Rebellion:  What was the U.S. role in Panama declaring its independence?  U.S. Military ships were in attendance  Panama receives $10 million and $250,000 annually from the U.S.

3  What issues did workers face?  Disease  Soft volcanic soil  5,600 workers died from accidents or disease  Total Cost= $380 million  Why were American relations with Latin America damaged?  American support of Panama rebellion

4  Roosevelt Corollary:  Keep U.S. dominant presence in Caribbean & Central America  Don’t forget the Monroe Doctrine!  International police power  Force to protect economic interests in Latin America.  “Speak softly and carry a big stick”???

5  Monroe: Stay out of Latin America!  Roosevelt: If you don’t we will send our troops!  Woodrow Wilson: It is our moral duty not to recognize countries who are oppressive, undemocratic and hostile to U.S. interests.

6  What is it?  U.S. government backs loans to foreign countries by American business people.  Why?  Keep European powers out  U.S. exercises international police power in Nicaragua.

7  Read pages 569-571  Create a comic strip about the United States involvement in Mexico. In the book from Mexican Revolution (p 569) to the Mexican Constitution in 1917 on page 571.  Be sure to include details, clues, and symbols.

8  Why would United States support Porfirio Diaz, a military dictator?  Diaz encouraged foreign investments in Mexico  Many Americans owned Mexican oil wells, mines, railroads, and ranches.  Francisco Madero overthrew Diaz, but couldn’t provide stability  General Victoriano Huerta, takes the government by force.  Why wouldn’t Wilson recognize Huerta’s government?  “government of butchers”

9  “Watchful Waiting”  Huerta’s officers arrested small group of American sailors.  Wilson takes advantage and intervenes in Mexico.  Huerta step down, U.S. troops withdraw without paying for damages.  Mexico did not like!  Huerta regime soon collapsed, and Venustiano Carranza becomes president in 1915  And recognized by Wilson and U.S.

10  Carranza did not have support of all Mexicans  Rebels under Francisco “Pancho” Villa (fierce nationalist) and Emiliano Zapata (son of a mestizo peasant) led the opposition.  Americans killed in the mines of northern Mexico and New Mexico  Villa was held responsible  U.S. and Mexico close to war  Constitution of 1917, government control of resources and regulation of foreign investors.  U.S. intervention clearly demonstrates the imperialist attitudes.
