The main activities 2004: Review of the Saybolt Environmental policy and its implementation, possible recommendations

Implementation Activities 2004 Environmental checklists prepared and distributed Process and return the checklists on current policies by 1 July 2004 Main focus on lab and office waste management / sample disposal Reporting during this Area Managers Meeting, October 2004

Main Findings: Saybolt-Corelab environmental policy implemented across the board Main basis for environmental compliance: local/domestic legislation 8 Locations report non-implementation of “cradle-grave” system for samples, but did they understand the question? 6 Locations indicate need for technical assistance

Main Findings (cont.): 38 Locations lack any form of office-waste separation plan (paper, glass, plastics, batteries) - At some locations not required by law, but facilities available -Some locations not required by law and no facilities available

Staff Suggestions -Reducing waste (paper & glassware) -Recycling (paper in particular) -Increase staff environmental awareness

More staff suggestions….. -Design smoking rooms -Increase pest-control -Increase small office space -More A/C units -Improve working environment: put potted plants in the office

Question In case e.g. waste separation is not required but facilities are provided at location: does Saybolt want to aim for a “Best in Class” approach?

Recommendations Review current environmental policy with the appropriate Quality Assurance Departments Consider formulating a pro-active “best in class” program starting from current “minimum standard-compliance” Continue to increase awareness Provide technical assistance where required
