In this section we will be able to give real life examples of Fractions and Proportions We will also learn how to solve and evaluate Fractions and Proportions in word problems. LESSON PLAN GOALS

We are constantly using fractions everyday. Most of the time not really even noticing that we are using fractions. Have you ever checked the clock or a watch for the time? Guess what the time is a fraction of a day so any time you use a watch, clock or timer you're using fractions. Have you looked at a recipe and prepared a meal? I bet there were fractions in the ingredients. Have you ever bought something on sale at a store and paid only a fraction of the price? How are fractions important in your life? HOW ARE FRACTIONS IMPORTANT?

How are fractions used everyday FRACTIONS IN LIFE

They sure are! I bet you have been to the grocery store and compared two items based on their price & size. This is an excellent example of finding the better value by using proportions. Most recipes are made for 1 or 2 people so how do you use the recipe for 4 people? Proportions! Using proportions you can transform the recipe so that the recipe applies to any serving size. What about long car rides, have you ever wondered how much longer until you reach your designation? Using speed and how many miles are left you can find out using proportions. Can you think of any other examples? ARE PROPORTIONS IMPORTANT?

Proportions definition and real examples PROPORTIONS

1.Everyone count the of students present today in class 2.Now count how many boys 3.Now count how many girls On your handout I would like you to write down two fractions. The first fraction should tell how many boys are in the class and the second fraction should tell us how many girls are in the class CLASSROOM FRACTIONS AND PROPORTIONS The graph above shows the proportion of boys and girls to the whole class

Christopher ate 2 slices of cake. Stephanie ate 1 slice. If Christopher ate 2/4 of the cake and all the slices were the same size, what fraction of the cake remained after Christopher and Stephanie had eaten? Solve the problem in word form and draw a diagram supporting your answer. FIND THE SOLUTION Christopher 2/4 Stephanie 1 slice ?

Stephanie ate 3 slices of cake. Gabriela ate 1 slice. If there were initially 6 slices and all the slices are the same size, what fraction of the cake is remaining? Solve the problem in word form and draw a diagram supporting your answer MORE PRACTICE Stephanie 3 slices Gabriela 1 slice ?

Tommy uses 9 liters of water to water 24 flower pots. He is wondering how many liters of water (w) it would take to water 40 flower pots. He assumes he’ll use the same amount of water on each pot. Write a proportion model for this situation. Then solve the proportion to determine how many liters of water it takes to water 40 flower pots. PROPORTIONS ?????? Liters of water ?

Stacy is putting on sunscreen. She uses 2 ml to cover 50 cm2 of her skin. She wants to know how many milliliters of sunscreen (c) she needs to cover 325 cm2 of her skin. Design a proportion to model the situation. Then solve the proportion to determine how many milliliters of sunscreen Stacy needs to cover 325 cm2 of her skin. MORE PRACTICE Milliliters of sunscreen ?
