4 Common and Proper Nouns Any old common person, place or thing is called a COMMON NOUN dog, country, girl

5 Common and Proper Nouns The specific NAME of a noun is a PROPER NOUN and must be CAPITALIZED. Fido, America, Mary

7 Common and Proper Nouns The boy told fido to go home. 1.Find the nouns in the sentence. 2.Decide if they are COMMON or PROPER. 3.Capitalize the proper nouns.

26 Review A common noun is a general name for something. A proper noun is the specific name of a person, place, or thing and is capitalized. Some nouns can be common, but become proper when part of a specific name.

27 Elements of Literature The Short Story- Plot

28 Review A short story is a work of fiction that is written in prose, & in narrative format. The setting is where and when the story took place.

29 Plot The plot is the sequence of events in a story or play. The plot is a planned, logical series of events having a beginning, middle, and end. The short story usually has one plot so it can be read in one sitting.

30 Plot

31 Exposition- introduces characters and setting. These elements are presented at the beginning of the story.

32 Plot Rising Action- the central part of a story during which various problems arise, leading up to the climax.

33 Plot The Climax- the high point of the story, where a culmination of events create the peak of the conflict. The climax features the main conflict and struggle, and usually reveals any secrets or missing points in the story.

34 Plot Falling Action- part of a story following the climax. This is the turning point of the story, leading up to the solution of the conflict.

35 Plot Resolution- a series of events that follow the climax, and is the conclusion of the story. Conflicts are resolved, creating a release of tension and anxiety for the reader. Not all stories have a resolution.

36 Plot Not a plot- " The king died and then the queen died." Plot- " The king died and then the queen died of grief." What’s the difference??

37 Plot A plot is a causal sequence of events, the "why" for the things that happen in the story. The plot draws the reader into the character's lives and helps the reader understand the choices that the characters make.

66 Plot Elements Exposition- The world had forgotten God and turned evil. One man was not evil- Noah

67 Plot Elements Rising Action- God said build an ark and fill it with 2 of every animal. Noah did as God said. A great flood came and killed everything. Rain stopped. Noah sent a Dove out.

68 Plot Elements Climax- The Dove came back with an olive branch.

69 Plot Elements Falling Action- Everyone left the ark. Noah made a sacrifice to God.

70 Plot Elements Resolution- God sent a rainbow to show people that he will never destroy the earth again by flood.
