2 Congress Bicameral legislature that consists of: – House of Representatives – Senate

3 House of Representatives (Lower House) Elections: – Every 2 years Qualifications: – 25 years old – Citizen for at least 7 years – Must live in state of representation

4 House of Representatives Number of Representatives – Decided according to each state’s population (435 members) – Based on the census – Not to exceed 1 rep for every 30,000 people – Each state must have at least 1 rep – http://www.house.gov/representatives/ http://www.house.gov/representatives/

5 House of Representatives Vacancies – Executive authority will issue a Writ of Election (When someone leaves their office, (death, quit, etc.) the president will issue an order for a special election to fill the spot)

6 House of Representatives Officers – The Representatives in the House of Representatives will vote on a “Speaker” and other officers http://www.house.gov/leadership/http://www.house.gov/leadership/ Impeachment – The House has the power of impeachment (official accusations of federal wrongdoing)

7 Senate (Upper House) Number of Senators – 2 per state (100 members) Classifying Terms – The Senate is divided into 3 groups or classes – Each class is up for a new election every 2 years – There is an election for senate every 2 years in which 1/3 of the senators are replaced

8 Senate Qualifications – 30 years old – Citizen for 9 years – Must live in state for which he/she is elected senator Role of Vice President – Vice President is President of Senate (Joe Biden)

9 Senate Officers – Chosen by the senators – President Pro Tempore (temporary president) chosen for circumstances in which the Vice President cannot be present

10 Senate Impeachment Trials – Senate has power to try impeachments – They are on oath – If President of US is tried, Chief Justice presides – No one can be convicted without 2/3 rds majority vote of senators present

11 Senate Punishment for Impeachment – Removal from office – Not allowed to hold any other office of honor, trust or profit in the United States – Liable to indictment, trial, judgment, and punishment for crimes committed according to law.
