3 · John Scopes, a Tennessee teacher, taught his students about the Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, which was in violation of state law. The Scopes Trial John Scopes

5 · Scopes was convicted and fined, and the law against teaching the theory of evolution remained. Dayton teacher and football coach John Scopes, seen here during sentencing, was fined $100 on July 21, 1925.

6 Butler Act: In 1925, Tennessee passed the following law, called the Butler Act: “It shall be unlawful for any teacher... to teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals.”

7 Scopes Trial Document Analysis Objective: analyze four documents to see the perspective of those who supported or opposed the Butler Act.
