2 Types of Hooks  Dialogue – starts your paper with a conversation between two or more of the characters “And where do you think you’re going?” my mother asked, glaring at me.  Quotation – a memorable or favorite quote you have heard that relates to the theme/message of your story. “Learn to laugh” is something my kindergarten teacher told me after Ralph Thorsen spilled paint on my daffodil picture. Forest Gump once said, “life is like a box of chocolates. You never know which one you’re gonna get.”

3 Types of Hooks  Intriguing Statement – an interesting fact or statement about the topic of theme of your story Dogs feel as much emotion as humans do  Metaphor/Simile – a simile or metaphor that adds meaning to your story My life has been a roller coaster. My family is like an open book.

4 Types of Hooks  Jump – jump into the action of the story There we were standing, staring, waiting for the ball to drop.  Dilemma – a decision you have to make or a “tough spot” you have to get out of Deciding to attend Hampton Roads Academy, a private school, was one of my most difficult decisions.
