1 OBJECTIVE 38: STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING BY DESCRIBING IMPRESSIONISM CHARACTERISTICS

2 WHAT IS IMPRESSIONISM? The impressionist style of painting is characterized chiefly by concentration on the general impression produced by a scene or object and the use of unmixed primary colors and small strokes to simulate actual reflected light.

3 HISTORICAL OVERVIEW o Mostly French artists o Rejected by art “establishment” (known as the “Salon”) o 1874: Created their own independent exhibition o Impressionism was originally a derogatory term o Art reflected their interest in changes in the light and atmosphere o Frequently painted landscapes o Influenced by photography, but focused on capturing what the camera couldn’t o Group of friends who influenced each other
