2 Exploration KEY TERMS Colony- A group of people who settle in a distant land but are still ruled by the government of their native land. Alliance- An agreement between nations to aid and protect one another.

3 Exploration KEY TERMS Conquistador- Name for Spanish explorers who conquered and claim lands in the Americas for Spain. Coureur de bois- French colonists who lived and worked in the woods as fur trappers. Missionary- Person who tries to spread certain religious beliefs among a group of people.

4 Jamestown and Plymouth KEY TERMS Charter- A legal document giving certain rights to a person or company. Burgess- A representative in the colonial Virginia government. Representative Government- A political system in which voters elect representatives to make laws for them. Established church- A chosen religion of the state.
