14 Bystanders have the power – it’s about listening to the voice in your head that something is wrong and doing something Who are the bystanders?

15  Bystander approaches foster and encourage empathy  ‘Engaged citizens are not likely to be passive bystanders. We need to look at ways of engaging and getting people to step up to the plate’  How do we stop men going on the defensive – ‘Inviting not Indicting is the way to do this’  Bystander intervention training puts an individual or group into a situation from a distance. Its creates a safe place within which a conversation can start.

19 You’re in the hallway between classes. You see a couple you know arguing, then you see the boy push his girlfriend. He isn’t a close friend of yours, and neither is the young woman, but you do hang around with the same group of people. Nobody else is doing anything.

20 Options Nothing. It's none of my business. Attempt to distract the couple somehow, maybe by talking loudly, in order to defuse the situation. Shout out something so that everyone in the hallway hears, like "Hey, what are you doing? Leave her alone!" and stick around to make sure the situation has calmed down. Talk to the girl at some point and let her know I saw what was going on and am willing to help her. Don’t do anything now. But as soon as possible, that day or later, I should make a point of talking to the boy and suggesting he get some counselling to deal with his abusive behaviour. Talk to my parents, a guidance counsellor, the school social worker, a teacher or the school nurse and ask their advice on what to do. Personal Option
