4 Application Process Application for Atlantic universities and colleges usually begin in Feb. Ontario/BC universities require earlier admission. Save career expo applications (Oct. 20 th ) Transcripts are not ready until mid-February. Students apply in guidance.

5 Graduation Requirements You are responsible to make sure you have the following compulsory credits for graduation: 3 EnglishCLM/PAL 2 MathCanadian History 2 ScienceGlobal His/Geo 2 technologyFine Art Credit 5 Grade 12 credits 9 Immersion Credits for those in Immersion Program

6 Career Expo Occurs on October 20 th Parent evening the same night Reps from about 40 post-secondary institutions. Come prepared with questions Use time to visit several booths Collect and save applications

7 Admission Information Students must check to see that they meet the admission requirements and deadlines of universities/colleges of interest. Students will be assessed based on first semester marks and grade 11 marks for early admission. Most institutions require a fee to process applications Most have an on-line version for faster processing For those students interested in residence a separate application is sometimes required.

8 Scholarships Community based scholarships that arrive throughout year Entrance scholarships School-based scholarships Parent work scholarships Internet options: scholarships Canada.com studentawards.com Involvement is as important as marks for winning scholarships

9 Student loans Are meant to supplement income Not all students are eligible A parental contribution calculator available on line Students don’t apply until late May/June Students must apply on-line Processing time takes from 4-6 weeks Website: studentloans. ednet.ns.ca

10 Ranking Minimum of 85% 5 courses used in calculation including English and a minimum of 3 grade 12 courses and next highest marks from grade 11 or 12 Advanced courses are given an extra value of 1.05x You cannot count 2 courses in the same subject area

12 NEED HELP See your guidance counsellor to set an appointment to discuss options Complete an updated CHOICES profile to look at interests, skills, and find careers that match your personality.

13 APPRENTICESHIP On-the-job training Graduate must find employer 2000 hours = 1 year of training Apprentices earn 40-90% of journeyperson while training Only certain trades have apprenticeship options (54) 21 % increase in active apprenticeships since 1988

14 Nova Scotia Community College 80% of HS students feel they will go to university 50% will 14 campuses across Nova Scotia 8400 FT 12,000 PT students Over 140 program options Programs suitable for All types of students Nova Scotia is experiencing a shortage of skilled workers

15 Private Career Colleges A business that offers occupational training Colleges must be registered to obtain financial aid. Often have less stringent admission requirements Nova Scotia has 44 registered private colleges

16 Coop/Internship programs Allow students to get job experience while they learn in post- secondary environments. Allow students to subsidize education Allow students to make valuable connections with employers Allow students to have a more detailed resume
