1 Warm-up What are properties? Objective:
identify physical, chemical, and characteristic properties of some common elements. Warm-up What are properties? Don’t remember? Check your Vocabulary section.

2 Let’s discuss the differences between how we describe matter: (Complete the Notes W.S. as you go through the following slides) 1. Physical Properties: properties of matter that can be observed with our 5 senses! These properties CAN change without making a new substance! Examples: Color (This color is white) Texture (The chair is smooth) Shape (The ice is square) State of matter (The ice is a solid)

3 2. Chemical Properties: properties that can NOT be observed with our 5 senses, but only can be detected when put into action! Examples: Flammable Combustible Ability to Rust

4 3. Characteristic Properties:
(Physical) Properties of matter that never change for a substance, no matter the sample! Examples: Melting Point, Boiling Point, Density Each sample of ice shown below will melt at the same temperature. Of course one will melt faster due to its physical property of size that has changed, but they won’t both melt until they reach that certain characteristic temperature specific for ice!

6 Lab: Physical and Chemical Properties
Complete the top of the worksheet before you begin questions. Spend about two minutes with each item & pass it on when the teacher tells you to. Record 2 physical and at least 1 chemical properties of each object/substance
