3 3 Why use a citation manager? Organize and tag citations AND documents. Create instant bibliographies in standard formats. Create personal citation database of articles on your topics. Format papers with in-text citations and bibliographies in standard formats. Share your database of citations/articles with others.

4 4 Zotero Free to everyone--on the web (Center for History and New Media). Mozilla Firefox extension--minimum requirement Firefox 3.0--requires browser plug-in. Cite from within Word or Open Office documents-- requires word processing plug-in. Store and search PDF’s, store images and web pages. 100MB free storage/1 GB $20/yr Capture articles from the web as you read them. Take rich text notes in any language. Interface available in 30 languages. Create groups to share content.

6 6 Zotero Hints Many online catalogs, databases and websites integrate—look for the BOOK icon or ARTICLE icon or FOLDER icon in the web search bar. Use BibTex format option from databases –check the items to download. Google Scholar, one item at a time (set your preferences first). Zotero 3.0 is in Beta for Mac, Windows, Linuxhttp://www.zotero.org/blog/announcing-zotero- 3-0-beta-release/http://www.zotero.org/blog/announcing-zotero- 3-0-beta-release/ researchers can now download and install a version of Zotero that runs fully independently of the Firefox browser

8 8 EndNote X5 (Desktop) Purchase from bookstore ($76.99) or free 30 day trial. Storage for an unlimited number of references and articles. Includes 5,000 bibliographic styles. “Cite While You Write” option to add citations to text and create bibliographies. Collaborate with EndNote Web and share with groups or individuals. Search internet databases and bibliographic databases including Web of Science, Ovid, PubMed, the Library of Congress, and university library catalogs from EndNote. Connect to data sources worldwide—EndNote provides MARC formats that support native language libraries around the world. Export references directly from Web of Science, Highwire Press, Ovid, OCLC, ProQuest and more.

9 9 EndNote X5 Hints EndNote X5 will locate and download full text for you—no additional steps required. Select one or more references, a group, or your entire library and have EndNote X5 scan for full text available to you. When the full text is found, EndNote X5 downloads and links it to the appropriate reference automatically. CAUTION: Systematic downloading of full-text will cause data base vendors to cut-off access to Stanford users.

Integrate with EndNote X5 (and older versions). “Cite while you Write”--requires word processing plug-in. Use EndNote Web toolbars in Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox to access your reference library in one click, and capture citation data easily--requires browser plug-in.

Must re-synch EndNote Web subscription every year; login to Web of Knowledge EndNote Web presents users with links to Times Cited, Related Records® and the full record for one-click access to the latest information on a reference article. Easily transfer references to and from EndNote (EndNote X.0.2 and up) and export/import to previous versions.

Create your own account while on campus: Sign up for an Individual Account Search databases and mark citations for download in RefWorks format. Storage limited to 3GB RefGrab-It for web searching is available as a bookmarklet or as a plug-in to your browser. “Write-n-Cite” option—requires plug-in for Word.

13 13 RefWorks Hints Can share your database of articles via public url. Manage Alerts – RefWorks has incorporated an RSS feed reader to import data directly into RefWorks. Ref Mobile—search, add, manage folders on your mobile device. www.refworks.com/mobile All alumni of subscribing academic institutions will have life-long access to RefWorks. Access will continue to be available to an institution’s alumni as long as that institution continues to subscribe.

Explore research trends and statistics "auto watches" a specific folder(s)- save a PDF to that folder, it is automatically imported into your library (with metadata). Backup, Sync, and Mobile: Access your papers on the web, iPhone or iPad. 16

From Papers Preferences choose the Sources tab and: 1. Leave the Authentication URL blank 2. Set the Library Proxy to: http://ezproxy.stanford.edu:2048/login?url=%@ http://ezproxy.stanford.edu:2048/login?url=%@ Close Preferences and restart Papers. The next time you double-click on a reference to access full-text, you'll be asked to authenticate with your SUNet ID and password. Assuming Stanford subscribes to the journal, you should be able to access, download and link the PDF to the reference within Papers.
