Why is the author writing? What is the author’s purpose?

Every author is writing for a reason. You, the reader, must determine why the author is writing that selection. Generally, an author is writing a selected piece for one of three reasons: To inform To entertain To persuade

To Inform The author’s goal when writing to inform is to provide facts and information about a particular subject. There are very few opinions expressed in informational texts. The facts in an informational passage are not used to persuade but used to teach. Examples of informative texts include: cookbooks, textbooks, and historical accounts.

Example The Underground Railroad was a secret organization which helped slaves escape to freedom. Many slaves were able to escape because of the conductors and station masters. The northern states were free states and slaves were free once they arrived in the north. Secret codes and signals were used to identify the conductors and station masters.

To Entertain When the author is writing to entertain, she/he may be writing to tell a story or to describe characters, settings, or events (real or imaginary). Examples of entertaining texts include: plays, poems, stories, jokes, or even comic strips.

Forever Friends you're my friend and that is true, but the gift was given from me to you. we went thru moments that were good and bad, even moments that were happy and sad. you supported me when i was in tears, we stuck together when we were in fear, its really sad that it had to be this way, but it has reached its very last day. miles away cant keep us apart, 'cause you'll always be in my heart. Make new friends But keep the old One is sliver and the other gold ! How did the farmer fix his jeans ? With a cabbage patch ! EXAMPLE

To Persuade The goal of the writer when writing to persuade is to get the reader to agree with the writer's opinion. Although supported by facts and examples, it is only to support his/ her opinion. Examples of persuasive texts include: commercials, advertisements, and editorials.
