Factors  Two major factors laid behind the problems of finding a stable government in the Canadas  First problem was the equal number of seats in the elected Assembly between the two Canadas. No gov’t could survive without equal support in both the Canadas.  Second problem was the large number of political parties and idependent members holding seats in the assembly.

Double Majority  To pass a law it needed a double majority from both the Canadas.  A double majority is when a majority of both Canadas agree on a specific topic.  However, it proved unworkable because neither West nor East Canada could agree on anything.

Party Leaders  Liberals- Francis Hincks  Conservatives- John A. MacDonald  Parti Bleu- Georges Etienne Cartier  Clear Grits- George Brown  Parti Rouge- Sir Antoine-Aime Dorion

Francis Hincks  Leader of the Liberal Party  He was a follower and friend to Sir Robert Baldwin  He was a reformer but he didn’t believe in violence to push forward any of his political ideas

Sir John A MacDonald Leader of the conservative party and like all of the parties he was much more moderate than the past years He believed in building railroads and expansion of industry He joined his political party with the Parti Bleu who shared his ideals

George-Etienne Cartier George was the leader of the Parti Bleu He believed in expanding industry and making railways allying himself and his party with the English conservatives

George Brown Leader of the Clear Grits The Clear Grits was a small group of farmers in reality but they where one of the most outspoken and powerful political group He believed in getting rid of big business, and everything French. He also despised that there wasn’t representation by population

Antoine-Aime Dorion The leader of the Parti Rouge He wanted to be rid of big business making allying with George Brown a smart idea. Except the Antoine was an avid protector of the French Canadian traditions

The End These politicians battled it out every day with no help from the loose fish Loose fish- individual people who didn’t care what so ever about what they voted for Making Political chaos
