2 2 Revolutionary War Begins

3 3 Patriots and Loyalists The war divided families and communities between Patriots, who sided with the colonists desire to be free from Britain, and Loyalists, who wanted to remain loyal to Britain. 5 5 Push for Independence The Second Continental Congress took place in May 1775 following the fighting at Lexington and Concord, all thirteen colonies sent a delegate Two documents: 1. “The Olive Branch Petition,” supported by Dickinson, wanted reconciliation with Britain 2. The more direct “Declaration of Causes and Necessities of Taking Up Arms,” led by John and Samuel Adams, clearly showed the colonists willingness to fight for independence!
