1 Descriptive Writing Have you ever seen something so beautiful that words could not describe it? Have you ever gone somewhere so enchanting that a picture could not capture it? Was it a place in your own imagination?

2 Behold! The Power of Words! Good descriptive writing allows the reader to see, hear, smell, taste and even feel what is being described. It describes a particular person, place, or thing. It describes details that appeal to one or more of the five senses using sensory words.. Have fun! Use good descriptive writing to paint a vivid picture with precise and specific details.

3 Put It Into Practice Think of something interesting to describe. Are there so many details to mention that you don’t know where to begin? Organizational charts can help organize your thoughts for descriptive writing.

5 Add Some Spice to Your Writing with Figurative Language Simile – a comparison using “like” or “as” –Fly like a butterfly, sting like a bee. Metaphor – a statement that compares two things without using like or as –My brother is a turtle. He is too slow. Personification – gives human qualities to animals or objects –The wind whispered in my ear.

6 Add Some Spice to Your Writing with Sound Devices Alliteration – repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of multiple words in a sentence –The busy bees are buzzing about the garden. Onomatopoeia – the use of words that imitate or suggest the sounds they make –Clackety-clackety-clackety

7 Get It Together! Organize your description. Use different types of organization to make your paper flow. –Spatial order Top to bottom, left to right, near to far –Order of importance List details in order of the most to the least important
