Why do so many adults warn against procrastination (waiting until the last minute to get things done)? Was there ever a time when you waited until the last minute and suffered negative consequences as a result?

Today’s Learning Goal I will think critically about the consequences of procrastination and plan ways to prevent it by discussing real-world examples of procrastination and completing the “Confronting Procrastination” worksheet.

Procrastination may not seem so bad now, but it will ruin adulthood if you don’t break the habit! You will now be presented with various real-world scenarios in which procrastination results in negative consequences. Record the possible results of procrastination in each numbered section on your worksheet using COMPLETE sentences.

Scenario #1: School Project You have a major group project coming up and your teacher gives you a week to complete it. However, you wait until the day before the project is due to communicate with your group members. Record possible negative consequences on your worksheet.

Scenario #2: School Activity You and your friends are planning to attend Lawndale’s Homecoming dance. The school requires you to complete and turn in a parent permission slip and code of conduct form in order to attend. You wait until the night of the dance to ask your parents to sign the form. Record possible negative consequences on your worksheet.

Scenario #3: Your First Job Congratulations, you have been hired for your first job. Your employer gives you a list of things to do before your first day. One thing you must do is submit a background check, but you unknowingly wait until the night before your first day of work to review the list your employer gave you. Record possible negative consequences on your worksheet.

Scenario #4: Applying for College You are nearing the end of your high school career and you have decided on the university you want to attend. The application process requires that you submit at least two recommendation letters along with your application. However, you wait until the week before the application is due to ask two of your past teachers for their recommendation. Record possible negative consequences on your worksheet.

Scenario #5: Paying Your Bills You are now a successful adult. You have a credit card payment due on the first of the month, which happens to fall on a Monday. However, you wait until Sunday night to make your payment online. Record possible negative consequences on your worksheet.

Exit Ticket In a brief paragraph, please summarize what you have discovered today about the negative effects of procrastination. How will you make sure to break this habit?
